Default EV Woes: Model S Plaid Spontaneously Combusts & Porsche Recalls the Taycan!

Welp, it wasn't a great week for EVs. Porsche is recalling the Taycan and a Model S Plaid customer says his car "spontaneously combusted." Full details on the ClubLexus sister site, EletricVehicleForums -- https://electricvehicleforums.com/ar...usly-combusts/

You don't need to be an EV to start an electrical fire.

Truth is BEVs have a much lower incidence of fire than petrol cars but gas cars going up in flames is old news I guess.

Because there are so few EVs on the road. My guess is that there are more battery EV fires as per percentage vs sold, than there are gasoline fires. I am sure there is a stat somewhere.

Inside EV is not exactly a “solid” source. Percentage of gas or EVs burning vs sold is a better comparison

Experts agree that electric cars catch fire less often than gasoline-powered cars, but the duration and intensity of the fires due to the implementation of lithium-ion battery systems can make the fires in electric cars much harder to put out. “A lot of energy is stored inside an electric car battery, and it’s meant to be taken out in a very controlled way,” says Abraham. “When that doesn’t happen you can end up with a very combustible reaction. It’s like what happens in hell, if you can imagine what happens in hell.”

or CNN article. Seems like EVs are less likely to catch fire but the fire is more intense.

There are different type of fires - could be an electrical short, could be oil drips or plastic bag stuck to hot exhaust, or could be something major. I don't know if there is data on full EV battery explosion vs gas tank explosion.

Also, in developing countries many people drive cars running on NG or propane, and those explode very often, from gas leaks and in crashes.

In parts of Europe, we have had CNG/LPG modified vehicles, and it is perfectly safe. Plenty of manufacturers even install these at dealerships.

Tesla just had another record sales quarter. Even with the chip shortage.
It ain't all bad news...
