Default Panasonic 4680 batteries for Tesla still 2 years away

(for those not familiar, the 4680 is a much larger individual battery cell that should help efficiency and lower cost)

maybe someone else can clarify here... i've read reports of tesla making 4680's 'now' at fremont, so why is panasonic 2 years away?

4680 at Fremont is pilot plant only. 4680 at Austin is full production plant (no panasonic relationship). Panasonic is also building 4680 cells at its own plants. Hope this helps.

Tesla Is Closer To Delivering Its Giga Texas Model Y's

Tesla is closer to delivering its Giga Texas–made Model Ys. We’re on the last leg of the trip, with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification coming soon.

Tesla has produced several Model Y all-electric crossovers at Giga Texas, and the EPA told Teslarati that once it approves the Texas-made Model Y, Tesla will be able to begin deliveries.

The new Model Ys from Giga Texas are being produced with Tesla’s 4680 battery cells and a structural battery pack, which has not yet gained the EPA’s Certificate of Conformity. The document is needed before a vehicle can be introduced into commerce. These certificates are valid for a single model year. New model year vehicles are tested in the EPA’s Ann Arbor facility every year to confirm they align with the EPA’s emissions standards.
Supposedly in the next ~30 days 4680 equipped Model Y's will be certified and for sale. One of those things I'll believe when I see. For clarity 4680's are being produced in house by Tesla not in partnership that is to come later.

thanks, need a bit of background here on batteries and the panasonic relationship...

did tesla completely rely on panasonic (joint venture) initially, but then developed their own in house ability to make batteries, or some other kind of relationship?

if tesla will have huge capacity to make batteries, why will they still need panasonic in 2 years at all?

Initially, Tesla needed Panasonic for US market. Now Tesla uses, LG, Panasonic, and CATL for their vehicles. 4680 is a design of their own that they developed in-house. They had multiple M&As to bring the expertise needed inhouse though. Tesla will need all the batteries they can get to continue their growth but Panasonic and LG want to make 4680 cells not just for Tesla, but any other EV maker than wants to use them.

This is the most confusing thing to me about 4680's. Will Tesla license them out? Simply allow any battery company to make them? I've listened to every Tesla financial call and still don't have clarity.

Either way Panasonic thinks 4680 is worth making they are dumping $700 million into a factory.

The 4680 will be tied to Tesla for awhile. I believe the $700M factory is just to supply Tesla as the factory in Austin won't be able to supply all the Model Y and Cybertruck demand expectations from that factory alone.

It's interesting that there are thousands of these powering Tesla's, and soon the 4680 will be joining the crew

if tesla has patents on the 4680 then i'm sure they'll make a piece off other makers making batteries for other ev companies.
