Test Drove a Model Y performance 2022
Finally after waiting for a while, I got a chance yesterday to test drive a model Y performance. I have to say I was impressed.
Not sure what to do at this point, I can't replace the LX yet, I was hoping the LX would be hybrid of some sort which is not, model X is way too much and I hate the yoke wheels and touch screen gear shift..plus not much larger 3rd row.
I also dont want to sell the GSF as it so much fun to drive(but can be replaced with Plaid I am seriously thinking about it) . The RX we have at this point is a beater. I am thinking of order a Y with hitch and roof racks and no auto pilot and see if I like it enough to change my cars.
Thoughts?
- Car is quick, makes my GSF feel slow. They asked me not to take it faster than than 85, there was a time when I was at 90ish when merging. a beep came on. So this thing just goes.
- Ride Quality - I was expecting harsh ride based on the 21" wheels and sport suspension. It was not bad; roads here are not like NYC so these wheels might not be an issue. I would ideally like 19"s though. The RX F sport I owned before had more jittery feel in the car.
- Interior Quality/Space - I wasn't expecting much since I test drove few model S (pre refresh) and I wasn't impressed, rattles and creaks were present. This car was dead silent, the seats felt good, quite comfortable actually. Even my wife approved. I think it has alot of storage places than our normal lexus cars and I think it beats our RX in that department easily.
- Tech- The tech in the car is cool, I am not fan of one screen and figure out the air controls, lights and everything else. I like how you can engage the cameras and wish it has a console for speed and other things like model S; but overall makes our cars feel dated; analogy is when we switched from flip phones to iPhones.
- Visibility- very good, I wish the rear view mirror was bigger, it was quite small, but other than that I couldn't find anything else to complain about, I like how our lexus has blind sport light in the mirror itself. I had to look at the screen every time. I heard the rep telling me that I can also turn on the sounds alerts too.
- Styling- I am not a fan of the egg shaped Model Y, I think the model S looks best, I wish it was sleeker.
- Handling - Good not great but much better than the RX we have almost similar to X5, but its feels heavy in corners. not that I am taking it racing.

If you can charge at home via 240 volt charger than go for it. Don't limit yourself to just Tesla if possible drive a few other EVs see what you think. If you're set on getting a Tesla order now it's getting to the point where Tesla may stop taking orders altogether due to demand.
Thanks for the mini review. On 21" wheels I would avoid them tires cost more, wheels tend to get damaged and yea it does hurt ride quality. They are for looks only everything else about them is worse.

Your analogy of the flip phone to iPhone is perfect. The technological leap between ICE and EV is undeniable. The driving dynamics between the two is night and day. The state where I live has the infrastructure for long trips, I mostly charge at home, so for me EV's make the most sense. You've already driven it, so you know how well they drive. The next thing to look at is, will you be charging at home, and does the area where you live have enough charging infrastructure? Once that question is answered, take a look at what the car is going to cost you in electricity and maint. Once you've factored those in, you'll have a better picture.
When my wife's lease on her 2020 Ioniq EV is up, it's going to be between the Model Y and the Ioniq 5, or whatever Ioniq is around at that time, but I'm probably going to buy and not lease

We were at the mall yesterday and I convinced my wife to pop into the Tesla store with me. They had a black Model Y Performance - I already know that I'd like to get the Y (I'd prefer the S but I'm not spending that much money) but I had to get her over the hump as she doesn't care for the exterior styling. Once she sat inside it was a totally different ballgame - she commented on how comfortable the seats felt, loved the layout, and really liked the glass roof. We are doing a test drive this upcoming weekend and I'm convinced she'll be a believer after driving one (I've driven a handful of Tesla's, although I haven't driven the Performance Y yet).
When I was playing around with the thought of ordering yesterday it looked like a Performance would be delivered sometime July-September. I'd sell my 2010 460L - I'm currently spending about $400-$500/month in gas in my LS so I am thinking of just putting an amount down that gets my car payment to that same range ($400-$500/month). The Performance that I spec'd out would be about $70k so I'd likely put down about $40k. It's definitely going to be my next vehicle, just a matter of timing on when we make it happen. I'm excited for the test drive this weekend.

This is one of the main reasons I would lean towards the Model Y:
That yellow outlined area is where they are building a massive Tesla Supercharger network, which is off the main hwy between Northern California and Southern California. They are expanding their supercharger network faster than any of the other networks like EA and ChargePoint. BTW that hydrogen station is pretty much always empty, they should convert that into charging stations as well

we have superchargers at every Wawa here, Wawa is like a Starbucks in PA/DE/MD/NJ area plus the regular places too. I will get the 240v installed in my house, so plan is to charge every night,

My advice is to reject the car, if you don't like the quality. I've seen some really well built Teslas...and then you get something like Patgilm's Model S . I went over mine very carefully and although it has some panel gaps, the paint was good and I had seen much worse. After 3 years, its still the best car i've every owned.

I really wanted a Lexus EV, but they are just not making these fast enough; for charging I am planning at home charging mostly;

My wife has no driven anything other than a RX or LX since 2007...and I took her for a test drive. She was objecting but I told her you can hang out at Nordstrom later so she was game. Once in the car she was like I dont know why we dont have this yet. They had a plaid also and she's encouraging me to get this and sell my GSF. Model Y I think checks all the boxes, I need a hitch for my Mountain bikes and I will add bars on roof for more cargo capacity if needed. I am spending about 600 a month on gas and this is me not driving a lot. usually in summer we are driving alot so about 1000 to 1200 in gas I am estimating. one of my favorite cars was the Ls460 so I can relate, the Y is not as dead silent in higher speeds but not too bad too. better than the RX (wind noise) I suspect good Michelins with 19" wheels will further help the car. There are also kits available to further bring the wind noise down.

Congrats! I personally think it's a very handsome car. Here's an interesting post from a guy on the CivcX forum I used to be on when I had a 10th gen Civic Si. He lives in SoCal and owns an Evora. His post is #47:

"Today took the Evora out with the wife, we hit Angeles Crest hwy. Evora 400 is a monster, built with these types of roads in mind. Coming behind me is a red Tesla. I know they are fast, but I'm thinking I'll teach this guy a little lesson. I slam it into 2nd and I'm hard throttle with a smile. No way that 5000 lbs beast can keep up on these curves. The smile faded and turned to wonder then curiosity as he kept right on my tail. Even on all the curves. I couldn't lose him, it at some points looked like I was in his way at the straightaways . After 20 minutes of this, I give him the thumbs up and gesture for him to pull over.
Turns out also behind him is a Hyundai, Ioniq 5 that was also keeping up. We chatted up, he had a Model Y performance, a fricking SUV! The cabin was a little simple, but laid out pretty well. The Hyundai had a better cabin and instrument layout. I was expecting the drivers would be techies, but they were enthusiasts just like me. The Tesla owner also had a BMW M340i with a 6 speed manual and an LS460 that his wife drives, but he plans to replace it with a Model S Plaid in 2 or 3 years. He said he rarely drives the M3 anymore!
Asked him about range, and he gets roughly 300 miles on a charge, he mentioned something about mostly charging to 80 percent unless he went on long trips. He said he charges majority at home, but uses Super chargers when going long distances. Said it takes 20 minutes to get from 10% to 80% and he's gone as far as Vegas with no problems. What was most impressive was he said it would cost him $20 to go from LA to Vegas!"

The guy is actually a very experienced driver and modder. Owned several BMW's, a 1988 Porsche 930 Turbo and 2017 Evora 400 with 6 speed manual. Everything he owns is Manual Transmission, his wife's car is the only automatic. He actually canyon drives and tracks regularly. I met him once in 2020 when I was in SoCal visiting my family. I mean you can try to blame the driver all you want, at some point it's not the driver but the car being outclassed
