Model Y with 4680 batteries
well this is interesting... guessing they're limited on production capacity of 4680 cells?
tesla's website doesn't reflect the lower range though.

Tesla’s 4680 Cells Prove Revolutionary As Refreshed Model Y Revealed To Have A Small 50KWh Battery Pack
Tesla first began delivering the refreshed Model Y at the Giga Texas opening ceremony. Despite having 4680 cells and a structural battery pack, the vehicle only has a 279-mile EPA range. At the time Tesla said the small battery pack was the reason for the limited range. And today we learned that the refreshed Model Y only has a 50KWh battery pack.Last edited by bitkahuna; 06-13-22 at 05:21 AM.

Don't think the 4680 pack is 50KWh it's the about 70 meaning the initial 4680's are very disappointing.

Pretty sure yep.
not enough weight reduction IMO for the pack to be only 50KWh most if not all the weight reduction is from the front and rear giga castings. My guess is Tesla is software limiting the new packs that could mean 4680's are delicate, could mean they are being overly cautious. Or something else.

The useable capacity is 67kwh on the pack (guess from Electrek). The 4680's advantage is packaging in terms of volume and weight. We don't know how much more batteries you can stuff in a 4680 Model Y vs. the old 2170 cells. So basically, the 67kwh battery should be less volume and less weight than a comparatively sized 67 kwh 2170 pack but who knows until someone is able to tear these things apart.

4680's are going to improve substantially going forward the technology itself is sound but very different. Which means it will take longer than Tesla wants to perfect.

Definitely a beta product right now. They are still producing these at the Fremont factory and shipping them to Austin. You can't buy this model unless you live in Austin. Basically beta testing for Tesla if you get one of these.

Yeah...lol. Lets hope the cars are at least built better since its using the mega casting process so less parts. I hope they lower the price too...$63k for a Model Y is too steep without Fed tax credit but as long as they sell out, nothing will change.

Model Y AWD (the 4680 279 mile model) is being produced in Austin at their new factory. Fremont is still producing 2170 Model Y Long Range and Performance.

I understand but I heard the initial builds of the new Model Y were using 4680s produced in Fremont. I don't know if they got the Austin one working now...I hope they did. I know they were having issues getting the production run started.

They’ve been building cars in Austin for months now. Tesla employees have been test driving and evaluating Austin builds for a long while now. Only very recently have any customers taken delivery. This gray one that’s been featured in videos and articles has got to be one of the very first customer deliveries.
