I'm a bit confused here... That would be 5.35 MPG which yeah, is horrendous. 14 gallons to go 75 miles? These crest 20MPG+ on the highway.

About the premium I'd say the compressions are decently high. But no damage at all if you use regular on pushrod American V8s.

So its a little more mileage than that, I looked at the receipt and we drove 172 miles and it was 14.4 gallons I pumped into it before we turned it in, so ~ 11.9 MPG, but thats assuming that it was totally full when I took possession of it. The gauge showed full but you know they aren't precise.

Its highway from the airport to Disney, but driving around Disney its rarely over 50 MPH, and theres a lot of idling in line to park and to leave, a lot of remote starting to cool it down, etc. The front end was also WAY out of spec, somebody hammered a curb or something.

I liked the Suburban, I'm going to do a writeup on my experience with it.

Engines usually require premium because of cylinder-compression and spark-advance. The more you have of either, the more likelihood the engine will need higher octane to prevent pinging/knocking, which, if serious, can damage the pistons and bearings.

I understand why engines take premium, thank you. What in the 10+ years of posting together on this site would lead you to believed that I didnt know that?

My point was, I don't understand why Chrysler designed the Hemi to require premium.

Well, I addressed your original question. If you had phrased the question that way to start with, I would have (maybe) answered it differently. Anyhow, the regular 5.7L Hemi (no pun intended) does not need premium.....it runs fine on 87-89 Octane. Premium is only required for the performance versions....R/T, Demon, Hellcat, etc......

On another subject, since you were (apparently) at Disney recently, I hope you didn't get caught in Ian. Its center moved very close to Orlando, although Orlando is far enough inland to escape the worst of the winds and storm surge on the coast. *

* After I posted this, I saw, in another thread, that you had gotten through Ian OK.

I think everybody understood my comment…

Did you really think that *I* did not know why vehicles take premium? With all the knowledge and experience I’ve displayed here? Come on. Every single significant contributor to this site knows why vehicles take premium.

So why do cars need premium? Asking for a friend.

surprised the R1S is the same size as the LX - thought it was smaller.

it's not how big it is, it's how you use it.

Also am surprised at the comparison, seems like Apples to Oranges to me. I assumed the Rivian was more of an X5/GLE competitor (or any mid-sized luxury unibody CUV).

They're exactly the same size and similar in price so the comparison makes total sense

R1S is based on a truck first just like LX600.
