Default Tesla Semi finally released

My quick take-aways
  • 1000 volt architecture
  • Using PLAID motors
  • 1 megawatt charging
  • 500 mile real world range
  • Can stand up in cab
  • tri-motor, 2 can disconnect under light load
  • Cybertruck to use 1000 volt architecture, will propagate through the rest of the line-up

Could be pretty special. The 500 mile run, fully loaded, is pretty special. The clip climbing Donner Pass was strong!
Quick disconnect, etc. Teslas are more than electric drivetrains. This could be the most advanced semi available.

What's the range at full load and what is full load? How does it do in adverse conditions? Will parts be on hand at all normal points of service or will it be hell like the cars?

Those are the most important factors

Wow this would be huge win for Tesla and should actually have meaningful impact to improve air quality.

Range is 500miles with 82,000 lb capacity, there is a hyperlapse video on youtube of semi achieving this from Fremont to San Diego. Other questions werent really addressed, but id imagine it would be the same like other EV's in cold climates.

He currently stated that the semi's are running 24 hours between plants (his real life test program for quality and etc) with downtime being to recharge only. But didnt give specifics on how long it takes to recharge ( I could have missed it if he said).

What is the weight of the cab vs load?

Semi itself weighs about 17,000 pounds, educated guess we don't know for sure.

if the charging time isn't too insane, a semi is a great use for ev tech. i would also think something like niro's swappable battery packs would be a great way to go.
other than that, having a fleet of ev semi's, some in transit, and some charging seems like a great setup. maintenance should be near zero and cost of operations WAY WAY lower than stupid diesel.

And then the battery burns out. If a battery pack on a regular Tesla is $10k? $8k? Imagine what it will cost on the Semi.

not enough coffee today?

i've not heard of any tesla battery being completely changed. and if a semi battery lasts say 10 years, it will more than pay for itself.

Tall, side profile could be a problem in high wings. The east-west interstates that criss-cross the northern states are notorious for gusty winds most of the year.

Cold temps will cause problems.

They use a Tesla "Megacharger" I believe. From about 5% to 80% in 30 minutes. Of course that's Elon time...

On the Model S it has happened and it’s $18k-$20k to replace.
