Buying a car in Florida as an out of state buyer
Hello,
I'm a Texas resident, and I'm looking to buy a certified Lexus from a dealer in Florida. The guy told me he would have to put the car on a flat bed and ship it to Texas ($1500). He could not allow me to take possession of it in Florida. I've never heard of this rule. Is it true?
He also stated you have to pay a transaction fee in Florida. He stated most dealerships charge $1500, but they only charge $999. I'm thinking this is a documentation fee. If that's what it is, no way am I paying $999 for a documentation fee. The dealership is Wesley Chapel Lexus.
Thanks,
Leo

Doc fees have no limit in Florida, but my CT had a doc fee of that $999, but I was able to negotiate my current CT, albeit it used, about a $1000 under asking (even in this market). That thing about not being able to take possession of it in Florida is garbage. You most certainly can, and they can give you a 30 day paper plate. I would never, ever, take possession of a vehicle without checking it out in person first.
