why do we need receipt anyway? what if the receipt show purchased 1 year ago but never used at all? is it considered brand new?

We have that rule because of several reasons (also explained in the sticky at the top of this forum where we ask people to post receipts for new items):

1) Many implied 'new' items have expectations of being able to claim a warranty from the manufacturer if something is wrong with the product. Hard to prove original owner or purchase date without the receipt.

2) A number of people reselling significantly marked up items for sale they got at sales like black Friday, online deals etc. Our classifieds aren't meant to be a personal flea market to price gouge your fellow CL members; this rule keeps them honest on the profit.

3) stolen merchandise doesn't have a receipt, sometimes we suspect items that are posted and this keep things on the up-and-up.
