i'm feeling stupid... how does this make the tranny run cooler?

and do i have to drain the engine coolant to install this?

The tranny cooler is built into the factory radiator on the Gs. So...you lower the temps of the coolant in the radiator and it in turn keeps your tranny fluid cooler as well. The tranny cooler input/output is the two little hoses running to the bottom of your radiator. You shouldn't have to drain the radiator, you may lose a little bit of fluid but you should be able to just top it off.

Man, this thermostat is a little pricy. I remembered when replacing thermostat on my other car they costed about $10 or $15 from auto part. If you are willing to lower the price, let me know. Otherwise GLWTS.

The reason it's pricey is because it's not a stock 180 degree thermostat it is an original TRD part. (Toyota Racing Development)

Carson is asking $88 PLUS shipping for these, I think my price of $70 INCLUDING shipping is more than fair.

BTW- I remember when parts for my Honda were 1/3 the price of parts for my Lexus. Maybe we should all go back to driving Hondas?

would the lower temperature negatively effect the stoichiometric point causing fuel economy to suffer slightly?

Not really. The stoich point is always going to be the same ratio of fuel to air, thats just a mixture ratio.
I think what you are trying to ask is if the reduction in temperature changes the burning of the fuel as there is a "sweet spot" at a certain temperature for best combustion. What the thermostat does is lower the operating temperature of the engine. This provides a cooler radiator along with everything the coolant passes through. The reduction in temperature allows for the air to be more dense with oxygen (cooler temps = oxygen rich air) the higher density and cooler temps allow your car to make more power with the same amount of fuel. Ever notice how well your car runs on a cool fall evening? That's basically what the lower temp thermostat helps to achieve.
