GS300 check engine light
Hey guys. I have a 1994 GS300 with quite a few miles on it. The check engine and trac off lights stay on most of the time. I looked in the owners manual and it said that the traction control is disabled automatically if there is engine electronic trouble. I ran a code scan and got code 71. This refers to the EGR system. The EGR valve was replace a year ago. I have checked all the hoses and electrical connections. I can't get this light off!!! Has anyone else had this problem and what was the cause? Thanks guys and great club!!

I just found a link to a page that has all the trouble codes. Code 71, as you stated, refers to the EGR system. Take it back to the shop that "fixed" it the first time. Or maybe the EGR system is clogged.
The page I'm refering to also shows you how to clear the codes. Maybe the shop didn't clear the codes when they repaired it the first time. Clear the code yourself and then see if it comes up again.

I broke the top half of the engine down the other day and found quite a lot of problems. The entire EGR system was clogged!! This car has had premium fuel burned in it since the day it was purchased new, but obviously that doesn't matter. I got everything nice and clean and verified that the EGR valve itself was operating properly and put it back together last night. It runs great and has a lot more power and response, but the check engine light came back on anyway. I ran a code scan and the same code "71" came up. I am sure of everything in the EGR system except for the EGR temp. sensor. I will replace it next. If that doesn't work, I will probably replace the oxygen sensors. I have been instructed by a tech at a dealership to replace oxygen sensors every 100k miles. This car has 214k miles on it and they have never been replaced. I hope someone else will benefit from my troubles. If anyone else is having the same problem, stay tuned. I will figure this one out yet!! Thanks for the info everyone!
