Default Help please! - Stereo problem

My pops keeps a 1st gen GS as a daily commuter. He often listens to informational audio tapes in the factory tape player. The tape player is now broken. I don't know specific details, but let's just say it's shot.

He asked me to get it fixed for him, but I don't know if I should simply replace the factory stereo with an aftermarket one or get the factory unit repaired/replaced. If anyone could give me any insight into what I should do, I would very much appreciate it.

Also, if it cannot be repaired, is it feasible to search for another factory unit, perhaps a used one? I realize that these will be at least 7 years old, but I would imagine that NO ONE ever uses their tape player (hence a used stereo's tape player ought to be in tip top shape).

Thanks guys!

edit: btw, I have not posted in the electronics section. I figure I'd ask here first.

Aftermarket stereos are about half as small as the stock one, so your car will need a huge plate to cover up the gaps.

I think your best bet would be to post something in the electronics sub-forum because someone might have a fix for the problem.

If that doesn't work, I would suggest looking in the classified forum for a used stereo.

The good thing is, they used the same radios (Pioneer stock, and Nakimichi upgrade) for the GS. I am not positive but you can look into it.

If its true then, any 93-97 radio will work, then you can post a WTB in the classifieds or use ebay. I know a few of our members have aftermarket radios!

If it's like a generic tape player problem (like autoreversing all the time for no reason) a general electronics shop might be able to fix it. ~$50-$150 I'd guess.

But another thing you could do, like DGOT said, is try to find a 93-95 factory radio with the CD button on it used, and that way you can add a factory changer. There's a dude on here LEXUSAUDIO and he buys and sells Lexus radios and knows which changers work with what models, too. Actually he could probably fix your tape player as well.

He's not so good with the CAPS LOCK though if you read some of his posts.

Don't get the NAKAMICHI, though, you'd have to change out everything (amp and speakers, too).

good luck. If you need the wiring diagram for the GS let me know.

Thanks guys!

I will try to PM LEXUSAUDIO - seems like he'd have some good insight into fixing this problem.

There are currently 5 or 6 factory Lexus 93-97 GS stereos on Ebay right now. All the different styles are represented, so I am sure you can find one like your father's. At my last visit, there were currently no bids and the prices were dirt cheap. Good luck!
