after 2 years of engine light "on"...
with no major mechanical problems, i found out what causes the engine light to come on
all the time even i reset the computer in so many ways. took my car to mechanic and accrdg to him,
the most common trouble code that 2jzge engines get is the malfunction of the EGR valve.
you guys might experience this in the long run but the EGR system needs to be cleaned and/or
replaced if necesarry. heck, the last time i took my car to long driving was up north in the bay area which
was 1 year ago, driving the car with the engine light "on". it's nothing major really, it's just part of the maintenance..........somewhat. so, my mechanic will try to clean up the passage way, whatever that is, and to see if that will cure the problem. if not, i will have to replace the damn thing.

hey pat, same here bro. i have my engine check light coming on and off. and the last time i went to my mechanic it was the EGR valve(which he cleaned) and he also replaced the 1 of the O2 sensor. i was wondering if you have wierd idle problems when our EGR valves are clogged up. for example when we come to a stop light the engine will bog down for a second or two then return to normal?
is cleaning the EGR valve something that we can do ourselves? how much is a new EGR?

i dont know how to clean the egr valve but if i check the manual, im sure i can do it but it will take some time. how much did you pay for yr o2 sensor? why did you replace the o2 sensor for?
how much thy charged you for cleaning the egr?
i have to see and wait until this wknd to have the car checkd. ijust brought to mechanic to get engine
code thru his machine. it stated malfunction egr. he even showed me. he said he will try to clean it up
first and see what happens. im not sure if i will replace the egr or not......dont want to spend much cuz im'
getting ready to get the turbo kit. i will also get a leak down test to make sure my piston rings and every thing else inside is in good shape to accodomate add'l ponies.........hehehe......
ill hit you up tomrrow.........

I had the same problem with the check engine light. The odd thing is, I began to predict whenever it would go off or on. It would come on whenever I drove the car at a constant 60mph for the length of a couple minutes, and it would come off under the same circumstances. This happened pretty much everytime I got on a highway.
Lexus diagnosed the problem as being the EGR system (Engine Code : 71), but they wanted nearly $1,000 to fix/replace the problem. No thanks. I got the OEM parts I needed from another source, and had my mechanic replace the EGR valve, sensers etc. It's been about 3k or so miles since, and no check engine light.

Until recently, my car was all jacked up. I had a big-time coolant leak, which of course just happened to spray itself all over the engine. Ended up bringing me down to 2 or 3 cylinders only and the car was shaking like crazy at idle.
No check engine light, though. lol.

if you do buy the egr block off plates and install them, the engine lights will still come on,
and most likely the car will not pass smog........unless u know someone that can pass you.....in which you have to pay $200.

Mine is doing something similar too. It only does it at idle and tends to do it more frequently before the engine is completely warmed up. The idle drops and recovers, then the light comes on. Sometimes, it goes away after a few seconds and other times, I have to start moving again. The latest I've seen it go off is just after the 1-2 shift. It's kind of annoying.

EGR VALVE INSPECTION
1.) Disconnect engine wire and heater water valve from cowl panel.
Remove the 2 nuts, and disconnect the engine wire protector and ground strap.
Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the heater water valve.
Pull out the engine wire protector and heater water hose from the cowl panel.
2.) Remove Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) pipe.
Loosen the union nut of the EGR pipe.
Remove the 2 bolts, EGR pipe and gasket.
3.) Remove EGR gas temperature sensor.
4.) Remove EGR valve.
Disconnect these hoses:
Vacuum hose from EGR valve
Pressure hose from EGR valve
Remove the 2 nuts, EGR valve and gasket.
5.) Inspect EGR valve.
Check for sticking and heavy carbon deposits.
If a problem is found, replace the EGR valve.
6.) Reinstall EGR valve.
Place a new gasket on the intake air connector.
Install the EGR valve with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)
Connect these hoses:
Vacuum hose to EGR valve
Pressure hose to EGR valve
7.) Reinstall EGR gas temperature sensor.
Torque: 20 N.m (200 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf)
8.) Reinstall EGR pipe.
Temporarily install the union nut of the EGR pipe.
Install a new gasket and the EGR pipe with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 27 N.m (280 kgf.cm, 20 ft.lbf)
Tighten the union nut of the EGR pipe.
Torque: 64 N.m (650 kgf.cm, 47 ft.lbf)
9.) Reinstall engine wire and heater water valve to cowl panel.
Install the heater water valve with the 2 bolts.
Install the engine wire protector and ground strap with the 2 nuts.
