Default Key fob issue......

I have been the proud owner of a 93 gs300 for 3 years and now just bought a 98 gs400! The key fob button that remotely unlocks the trunk does not work. I can unlock the truck from the inside with the manual lever...... that tells me the trunk solenoid appears to work fine. I also took apart the key and see that the unit is sealed, other than the area to replace the battery.... OK guys/gals...... in your infinite wisdom.... has anyone else had this problem and what is the fix?? Thanks! Marcus

My Dad's LS doesn't work either...I believe I read in the manual that the dealer can turn off the remote trunk feature, and I think that's what the dealer told my Dad, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Marcus,

I moved your post into the first gen GS forum

Do you have a second key (if not you should get one just in case)? Does the trunk pop work with that one? That will eliminate the key as the issue.

hey Dave, i think this belongs in the 2nd gen gs section because the first gen gs doesn't have a trunk release via remote, what i think he is trying to say is that he had a first gen, but just recently bought a 2nd gen and the trunk release will not work.

Dude i've got the same problem with my 98 i just bought, but actually mine works sometimes if you hold it. Its weird, I'm going to try changing the battery this week. When you unlock, do you have to do it from close or can you be from a very far distance?

From what i have read, If it does not work at all, you have to take it to the dealer have have them reprogram your CBEST settings to enable the trunk option.

One thing different about the trunk release with remote KEY is that one has to hold the button down for longer duration (roughly 5 sec).

this is correct. i had a mercedes clk 430 for a few months and you had to hold the trunk release for 2 seconds for it to open. its for if you accidently press the trunk button your trunk wouldn't be open all day, but if the door is unlocked on accident it isn't as noticable.

Thanks for the info... this is indeed a problem with the 98 gs400, Dave. The prior owner made me aware of it before I bought the car. Jmai.... good to hear from you again. I have been gone from the forum for quite a while. I still have the 93 gs300 and will sell it this Spring. I was wondering about the possibility of something needing to be reprogrammed.... is that in the chip in the key, or, on the car itself???? I thought I remembered someone making a post quite a while ago about changing certain features on the 98 & up gs by just doing something on the car without any special equipment??? I do not think it is a key battery problem as all of the other features seem to work fine. Well... it's great to be back and although I get quite a rush out of this 300 hp v-8, I will miss a lot of things about the style, look, and ride of the 1st Gen!

Marcus man, weren't you the one playing with nitrous or turbo with the first gen? i'm guessing it didn't go through. well glad your liking the your new gs.

just take it to the dealer and tell them to enable your trunk release should not take that long and should be free.

Yes, Jmai..... I am one and the same. I did put nitrous on the 93 gs300 late last summer. I fiddled around with the jets they included, ended up drilling the smallest jet to be one size larger than the largest jet supplied. I tested it on an almost empty tank of NOS.... there was surging due to almost being out of NOS. But.... there was no knocking which is good sign that the stock fuel injectors can supply the needed fuel. I have since filled the NOS bottle, but never tested it again due to our cold weather here. This state of Michigan is like one big ice cube..... maybe warm for 3 months out of the year, and the rest of the year is cool to bitter cold. The NOS bottle is supposed to be at 80 degrees temp to maintain pressure.
The reason I bought a GS400 is because the horsepower is a rush... just like my gs300 with nitrous!
The problem with nitrous is it is either all or nothing...... You are either wide open throttle or back to stock HP. Also I had to drive to a city 25 miles away to refill the NOS bottle......it is a hassle I did not want to keep up with. I need to replace the front shock tower housings as the 93 came out with defective ones..... a lot of noise going over even small bumps in the road. Then I will put it on Autotrader.com

Now..... thanks to you about the tip of CBEST and thanks to Salim because he was right about holding the truck button longer. C-best states there are 3 ways to program the trunk unlock. a. hold the button for 8/10ths of a second, b. one quick press, or c. two quick presses. After trying all three, nothing happened! Then I decided to just hold the button down. After 4 seconds, I heard a "beep" and the trunk popped open! I do not know why the 8/10ths second did not work, but I am glad to know that the key fob is (and always was) fully functional. I am glad to see that this website still has a lot of loyal followers, and a lot of new people too. This site is worth it's weight in gold! Marcus
