Maintenance Questions 93 GS300
I am currently waiting for the Lexus Service manuals, but if the following procedures aren't too technical, I might try them this weekend. I need to drain the transmission and change the filter. I also need to change the O-ring on the distributor.
Has anyone performed these ?? How difficult was it and can you provide some tips??
I am mechanically inclined, I just need a little guidance.
Thanks

the filter in the tranny is a magnetic one, I believe. You just wipe it off and put it back. Don't you have to drop the pan to do that, though? I'm a little confused on the whole tranny flush procedure myself. I know there are some posts in the maintenance forum with a detailed write-up.
To take the distributor cap off I think it is just two screws, they might even be phillips head. I just replaced the cap and rotor on mine not too long ago. I think the new cap came with a new o-ring.
Are you getting the authentic factory repair manuals? Very cool, I wish I had them.

Pianoman72, I actually have to change the O-ring that is where the dizzy mounts to the motor. The rotor and cap were replaced already. I actually found the manuals on eBay, ~$100 for both books. And they are authentic factory manuals.
Gompka, the car was serviced at Lexus and has had its 90,000 and 100,000 mile services. Timing belt was changed ,as well as the ignition system, etc. The plug wires look brand new, extremely clean.
The car runs like a dream, if not a little sluggish off the line.

Ah, gotcha. I haven't replaced that part, then. If you see another set of the service manuals let me know. $100 is a great price for them and you guys know how I like to scan things...

fuel filter is about $20 i think, it is located just infront of the rear tire on the driver side. When removing it be carefull because after you detach the fuel line coming from the tank gasoline will still pour out as a result of gravity so have something to plug that up. Might take a while to get the filter off, mine was rusted.

i would take it to a mechanic to change the o-ring on the distributor. i was going to change mine and he was charging me only 40.00 for labor. i guess it's not that hard to do but you just gotta make sure you
put the distributor back the same exact position from when it came off.
hope that helps.

There are no mechanics around here I trust.
Yeah, I was going to have Lexus do it, but it is $150. And I like to do maintenance myself.
The only thing that is causing me to hesitate it the timing. Unlike a Honda dizzy which can only be put in one way, the Lexus dizzy uses a gear that directly meshes with the camshaft.
I will probably take the cap off and mark the rotor's position to get it close when I re-install it. And then I can set the timing.
BTW, do we set the timing by rotating the distributor??
