Default Lowest octane on GS300

I posted in the other section, then realized this is for gen 1's.

my dad has a mint 93 GS 300 with 103,000 miles on it, its his daily driver and he commutes with it. Its never had a drop of anything but 91 octane in its life. With gas prices shooting up over 2.58-2.61 per gallon for 91 over here i figured i would ask what the lowest octane he can run in his car.

he's not racing, ever, do you think he can get away with 87 or 89.

If you look inside the gas lid, it will clearly say "use premium fuel only".Premium fuel is either 91 or 93 octane..that should answer your question and if the gas is too expensive, then maybe he can't afford to drive a lexus..I spend $38 a week to fill up my tank and it's the price I pay to drive the car that I always wanted..You will hear this saying around here alot, "You gotta pay to play"..

haha its not really a money thing, he has a lincoln navigator and a 2004 BMW 545i, like I said he has owned the lexus for 11 years since he bought it brand new and he's never put anything but 91 in.

38/week? premium is a 2.61 out in california. we know that it states that on the gas lid.

i'll just tell him to keep putting it in.

Dude to say that if he can't afford to pay for the gas then maybe he can't afford to ride is lexus is crude. Maybe you like paying 2.50 for a gallon of gas but some of us don't. Regardless of whether you drive a Lex, BMW or a freakin Pinto the current cost of gas by the way which has not yet peaked is costing everyone whether you drive a car or not and really has no bearing on the type of vehicle you drive whether you use regular or high octane. The difference is saving at my last check at the pump was .08 cents a gallon.

Now to answer ptownTSI question. I would only use Premium Gas in the Lex. Do not try to use the Lower octance fuel. The degredation in engine performance does not justify the savings. I hope this answers your question.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/...emiumgas_x.htm

I use 87 octane gas, even in the dead heat of summer (100+ degrees F in Dallas) and I've never heard a ping or 'felt' a performance difference. I don't drive the car hard ever either, so I don't put it in the position to knock. I can appreciate those who 'feel' they need to put more expensive gas in their $50K or more vehicle, but when a car nears 10 years old and is worth less than $10K, it's time to stop kidding yourself (and time to stop wasting money on expensive gas).

Another good (but long) thread on the topic, and notice who sounds like they know what they are talking about:

My dad put 89 in the car back when he had it and it started making noises. It drove fine though. I'm sticking with 93 and I'm just trying not to drive as much. You can always mix 89 and 93 and still keep the octane within spec.

I can clearly understand what Johnee is stating. If you can afford to drive a nice car, you certainly should be able to afford paying for gas. Just look at it this way, one less trip to starbucks during a week will be good for you and your car.

Some people may have been lucky and were able to get away with lower octane in their car, but I wouldn't risk it, especially if you have high miles on your car because it will be more susceptable to knocking (carbon buildup) and engine damage (because of the age of the engine). Saving a few bucks at the pump might end up costing you thousands on a new engine if something bad happens...I wouldn't risk it.
