Not sure how well known the http://www.autopia-carcare.com/ site. Another is bettercarcare.com, and specifically this article on getting the perfect shine:

This is the method I use, and the results are amazing. I really like the Klasse products (I use both the all-in-one and the sealant glaze, and I swear there's enough in these 16 oz bottles to do 100 cars) and the P21S wax and paint cleanser. Both P21S products can be found at Harley Davidson for much cheaper than other places.
Good luck on getting the perfect shine.

take a white applicator pad and rub some polish onto your paint, if the applicator turns black (or black-ish) then you have single stage paint. ALL cars have clearcoat, but some Lexus black's have single stage, meaning its the paint and the clearcoat in one shot. Other colors are the paint in one layer and a layer of clearcoat on top.

I can tell you that the metallic Lexus OE colors have a clearcoat. My brother's clearcoat ('94 GS 300) is starting to come off the roof near the drip rail- his car is metallic blue. No big deal for us- we were planning to repaint the entire car when we install the Veilside kit.
Toyota did this in the 80s, too. Metallic-colored cars were all clearcoated. Solid colors (like red, black, white) did not have clearcoat. This is why my red '85 MR2 is getting repainted... the colors start to fade with UV exposure. As careful as I was with that paint, 17 years will take its' toll.
DGOT is right on. If the color comes off a bit when you use a little polish, it is not clearcoated.
