considering going first gen GS
well, i currently drive a 92 ES 300... it's a comfterable car, and enjoyable to drive... but i'm a car guy, and front wheel drive just isn't working for me.
Lately I've been considering when I'll make my step up... at first I thought IS, but that's a little unrealistic for me at this point in time... and one of my buddy has a first gen GS with Tein's modified to fit off a 98. I took a ride and now I'm hooked.
It will probably be 6 months or so before i decide to jump into this, but I wanted to hear from you guys what some common problems were in these cars so I know what to look for... and what I may have to plan on fixing. I also wanted to hear what all is offered in after market, and around what prices, to get myself an idea of what I'm in for.
also, if anyone has any nice photos of JDM or american tuned first gen's... I'd like to view them. Heck, even if it's your car.
I'm just trying to get some ideas.
Thanks guys.

hey buddy, i want you to know that you will enjoy the 1st gen gs compared to yr es300........guaranteed!
well, its all depends on you how you will mod it. if ur not aware, 93-96 are 4-speed auto while 96 and 97 are 5-speed auto.........no big diff and share the same engine, 2jzge. ill tell you rt now that it's hard to get
aftermarket parts for 1st gen gs but if you have patience, hmmm, maybe like 3-4 mos of wait, you can
have some good toys on yr car straight from japan!!!........hehehe....
im not sure what the common problem with these cars but as far as i know, the EGR valve seems or
somewhat dont function right and this is when you get the "check engine" light on. i believe it justs needs
to be clean as it gets clugged up after many years.
if you do get a high mileage gs, just make sure you maintain the frequent oil changes every 3000 miles,
change timing and/or water pump if necessarry and you're good to go! some say you dont change timing belt until you reach 80,000 miles but heck, i chnged mine rt away when i brought the car home.
aftermarket parts? you can get lowering springs for the car almost anywhere. injen makes aftermarket
intake or you can just drop in aftermarket filter from blitz, trd, etc. you can also acquire jdm parts from ebay
like headlights, tail lights (where "gs300" is replaced with "aristo"), jdm front grille (where the "L" badge is replaced with the toyota symbol). if you're crazy about hid, you can also do a retrofit and have the same effect light output you see on bmw, mercedez, audi, etc.
well, that's it for now. im sure other guys will be glad to help you once you purchase the car!
feel free to ask more questions. good luck!

here's a few of mine.. 93

and the obligatory shot for Lexus4jess
Did I mention that my car is going strong at 212k miles? I bought it with 206k on it and it has done nothing but get stronger. The stock motor is a crutch for now, I have a GTE waiting in the garage for it.
I have more pics on this forum, a whole thread in fact with my brakes, Bride seat (didnt I see a thread from you on the SELOC forum about racing seats in your Windom?) Just look for the thread if you'd like to see.. I dont want to clog this thread double posting them.
Good luck in the hunt for a 1G.. I searched for 6 months!!

93 with 93k
Here is my 93:
I love the Gen I body style and the car can be tweaked many ways as you can see. Check out the Gallery for more pics. I think the most universal PITA thing about Gen I is the warping of the door trim on the driver side. Everyone I know has to deal with it sooner or later. Good luck!
