Default Vibration in the steering wheel when braking

When braking, i sometimes get vibrations in the steering wheel, sometimes barely noticeable and sometimes extremely violent. But most of the time, there are no vibrations. This has been happening for a couple recent months.

What could it be? If its the rotors, vibrations would be present at all times, right? My suspension is in good shape, just had it checked out last week and replaced two lower ball joints, everything else is intact.

they tell me ,when you replace your brakes you are supose to change your rotors,no turn them.they don't recommend you to do that.I have the same problem now.had my brakes done 2 months ago.And I still have that problem.will replace the rotors to see if it go's away.balances all my wheels as well.

Sounds like you have a warped rotor.

I had the same problem when I first got my GS. the stock brakes were crap. I installed mk4 calipersand rotors up front and dimpled and slotted rotors and lines all around and it went a away. Then, i did some very "spirited" driving and repeated hard braking and I seem to have warped the front on the driver's side again. I'm not sure if I can get the bump turned out of the slotted rotors, but I'm going to try soon.

one thing I did notice.. if I apply the brakes harder the vibration is not so bad, but applying the brakes lightly it is much worse. My brakes are very touchy, so I hardly ever stomp the brake pedal in normal driving.. I could hurt the passengers if they aren't paying attention..

"spirited" driving eh? I know i do alot of that too lolz I had a similar problem and what ended up happening was that my front right break was somehow not working properly... Its like it would get stuck and on the highway at times my steering wheel would shake violently like i was in bad need of tire balanceing. I looked and the break pads on the right side were just totally gone... I replaced them and now everything is fine and dandy.

I have new Toyota Supra OEM pads on the front and the wheels "freewheel" perfectly when I have the car up in the air. I only ever get the vibration when I lightly press the brakes. I'm quite sure it is a warped rotor or rotors on the front, since driving by the concrete dividers on the highway I can hear the chuk.chuk.chuk. everytime the wheel rotates and the pad hits the high spot on the rotor.

Woohoo!! 100 posts!!
edit: i was wondering what 100 posts would get me.. no more Rookie.. I'm a Driver now !

And I know for a fact that you can vouch for that since the car was literally 6ft off the ground thanks to a certain event....hehehe

Hello,

1st Gen GS newbie here I just got a 1993 GS several months ago, which was in EXCELLENT condition but I recently experienced the exact same problem and after having a diagnostic done it appeared that my front caliper piston was sticking. After having the caliper replaced it is running fine. Outside of that the car has been great!
