The power button changes the way the transmission shifts. If it's activated, it downshifts quicker and if you're flooring the gas pedal it shifts to the next gear near redline. Keeping it activated will use more gas because it will downshift faster and it upshifts at a higher rpm.

The overdrive button is the transmission's fourth gear. If you turn it off, the transmission won't shift into third gear. You need third gear because it's the gear that saves gas by lowering engine speed when cruising.

close. but actually the over drive IS your forth gear. if you turn OFF OD your car will stay in third and WILL NOT shift into fourth gear. overdrive is good to use if your going up a hill under 65mph.

oh and another thing, if you notice he said he has a 96 GS. a 96 gs has a 5 speed transmission so i guess we are both wrong.

If you turn off OD your car will stay in 4th gear, but if you turn it back on (light in the cluster off) the car will shift into your 5th gear

basically overdirve off will make your car run in 1 lower gear than the max.

He's right. Since your car has a 5 speed, overdrive would be your 5th gear.
