Elevation Is The Answer
Those that travel in higher elevations get significantly better gas mileage. It is all done with the computer.
In higher elevations, the O2 sensors detect less oxygen in the atmosphere, so in order to prevent a "RICH" fuel mixture, the sensors cause the computer to "lean" out the mixture at the injectors.
So less gas, less air equals less power, but MORE mileage. This is why lower octane is acceptable in the mountains., but causes a ping at sea level.

Does it cause a ping at sea level? Do you know that for fact? I'm asking because the same year automatic NA supra only uses regular gas. Same engine compression, HP output, TQ, etc..... Whats different? I asked my father this. He's and ASE certified mechanic and he said almost always if the owners manual says something then it's for a reason. Him nore I could come up with why. I don't know.

Well, after driving it for awhile after I got back from my road trip, I now back down to about 20. Still better than my previous 17mpg. I am running a semi synthetic 20-50. I won't run full syntetic, especially with 230,000 miles.
