Default Car smokes after driving...switch to 10w30?

I noticed recently that I am having some trouble with smoke out the exhaust after driving for long period of time(at least that is when its most noticable). I currently use 5w30 oil, should I use thicker 10w30 on my next oil change?

Either use 10w30 or 15 w50 ( I think). I'm using the 15 w50 right now and its been great so far. Though the oil cap says to use 5w30, the car ages and you should use a thicker oil.

this is for synthetic or conventional or doesn't even matter? ....cause i get the smokes too using the synthetic...and even though my baby's 12 year's old it's still too young to smoke....

I would go with synthetic for the fact that it lasts longer than conventional.

How many miles are on your car? How much oil are you losing? If you're losing a quart every thousand miles or so, I would stick with regular oil. A thicker weight oil will help slow down the burning because it's harder for the oil to leak past the worn piston rings, valve guides, etc.

If you use synthetic when it burns that much oil, you're wasting your money. I'm not sure synthetic will stop or slow down the smoking if the engine is worn down so much that it smokes and burns a lot of oil. Synthetic oil is good for keeping the engine lubricated in stressful conditions, doesn't burn under high temperatures (but will burn if the piston rings or valve guides are worn), and offers good protection for a longer period.

You should check your PCV valve. If it's not functioning right, it will cause the engine to burn oil. The PCV opens up a tube so the fumes created by the engine oil in the crank-case and head get sucked into the intake and burned. If it's open all the time, then it will suck oil into the intake and you'll burn oil. It's easy to replace and pretty cheap too. I *think* it has to be changed at 90k miles as a maintenance item.

Cool

It's normal for am engine to smoke after changing to synthetic for a little while. You might try a flush of the engine (seafoam or amsoil) at the next oil change.

thanks for the advise.....once i've acquired my gs300 i actually already did the seafoam treatment (oil crank case, fuel, brake booster hose) and then have 'em flush the oil and put in synthetic oil.....and then it began smoking....should i continue?

I wouldn't worry about it if you already did the seafoam and then flushed it out and installed synthetic, it's normal on an older engine and will stop after some time. To be safe and sure keep a watch on the oil level and make sure it's not burning oil. If it is burning any more than a quart within 3000 miles you have ring problems.

I have been using regular oil, not synthetic. My car has about 157K miles. I'm not sure exactly how mujch it burns but I do know I can tell I have exhaust leak because my engine bay is full of smoke after driving for long period. It is not an oil leak because I let my cousin drive the car(while i follow) and smoke does come out the exhaust when he got on it.
