Default Purcashing '98 GS400 soon (maybe?)

Hi Everyone,, I have the chance to buy a '98 GS400 next month from work but need some advice. This car has 135,000 miles on it !! It is a company car driven by one of our top sales guys so they are all highway miles. The company pays for maintaince so I am sure he took care of this considering his attention to detail in his work projects.... We havn't firmed up a price but he said definately not over 10K. Which for him could mean $9,999?? KBB says trade-in for this is from $9,100 to $9,900 depending on condition. What do you think I should offer this guy? Have the people with higher milage cars had any problems? I know Lexus builds a good product and I am in the engine industry (GM Industrial) so I know a few things about cars.. just curious to see what people in the field are expierincing.. thanks in advance!

thanks for the words Morris,, thats the sweet thing,, He is willing to give it to me for cheap (i.e. no more than he would get for a trade-in).. what do you think of that price?

thats a great price nada lists it at 14 to 17 K for the car

Assuming it is in good mechanical condition I would go for it.

Okay, so now I am in a real delemia..... the car has 160,000 miles!!! that is some high milage,,, I am not sure what to do now?? Maybe I should start looking for another GS with lower milage and fork out 16-18K.. what would you do in the situation.... If I get it I would probably only keep it for about a year, do you think I would lose my a$$ on this deal?

if it looks/runs good and you can get it around 9-10k like you said, it'd probably be worth it.

otherwise, that is alot of miles to start out with. I've been seeing GS400s with 70-90k for $13-15k

I've got a 98 with about 165,000 miles on it now. It runs and rides better than some new cars I've been in. That being said, IF you could afford another $3,000-$4,000, I would look for something under 100,000 miles. No matter how well the car is built, some stuff is just going to wrong in the 150,000-200,000 mile area. And that's usually expensive stuff! BUT, if the deal is just too good to pass up, don't hesitate. It's a great car!
