If you haven't guessed it, I just bought my 93 GS 300, hence all the newbie questions. What brand and type of fluids do you use (ex. brake (synth?), oil (synth or high mileage), power steering, etc. I was planning on using Penzoil High-mileage oil which I used on my 94 Olds which is pushing 200K and strong. Let me know.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I believe if you use anything other than toyota fluid in your transmission, you're going to be up for a rebuild very very quickly!
As for the other fluids, I stick with Motul or redline. Whether in my STI, Supra, Soarer or Audi

Check your owners manual for the fluid and lubricant specifications recommended for your year.
You did not mention the mileage, but I would suspect near or over 100K.
Your year may use Dexron III in the transmission, rather than the Type IV ATF the previous post suggested.
Insure you use the correct fluid type. The Dexron III is the replacement for Dexron II, and may be used in place of the Dexron II, no longer available.
If the fluids are not fresh and clear in appearance, then consider replacement.
The coolant originally was Toyota red Long Life Coolant and distilled water.
I would consider reusing this, as it is designed for your cooling system components and seals. Insure to drain the engine block with the radiator.
The engine oil; you risk an oil leak with synthetic, yet high mileage blend may not be required unless it is already leaking. A good SL or SM grade 5W-30. Your Penzoil suggestion should be fine.
The Toyota supplied oil filter is very good. Our posters suggest against the Fram filters, as they bypass too quickly.
Dexron III is also used in the power steering.
The brake fluid should look clear to slight yellowing in the reservoir. Use only DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid (OEM is DOT 3). No synthetic DOT 5.
Lastly, your stock air filter is best for the engine, obtainable and reasonable at any Toyota dealer

Hi Tammy, thank you for a very thorough answer. I really appreciate it. I will take your advice. I was considering K & N air and oil filters, but you say that the Fram oil filter allows too much free flow so K & N may not be wise. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks El Captain. I have read that synthetic oil for older cars is not recommended due to the high possibility of leaks. I assume you have not had that problem. I have 135K on my 93. What is your mileage?

Personally, I like the K&N oil filter... It is the only one I use. They are a little pricey at $12. I'm a believer to use the best oil filter one can buy. They have had excellent reviews.
Not too excited about their oiled air filter. I have used them and found no increase in torque or power, but needed to replace the MAF sensor due to oil contamination. The only feasible cause was the K&N air filter. I've since replaced the filter with the standard Toyota paper and the MAF is clean and dry after two years.
