Default Exhaust smells like sulfur or rotten eggs

Now I know you're not supposed to be inhaling a car's exhaust fumes in the first place but my exhaust smells really bad - like sulphur when you first light a match or a nauseating rotten egg smell.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what to try fixing? I've searched all over and the suggested fixes range from engine running too rich, bad catalytic converter, bad Oxygen sensor, bad gasoline, bad throttle position sensor.

Any experiences to share is appreciated.

Okay thanks all. I've been researching more and a bad catalytic converter is the most likely problem.

The most likely reason for the catalytic converter going bad in the first place is because of a bad Oxygen sensor. A faulty O2 sensor can cause the engine to run too rich (running with excessive fuel) which causes catalytic to fail since it runs hotter with a rich fuel mixture.

Before I jump to buying a new catalytic, I will try testing the resistance of each of the 3 Oxygen sensors and hopefully find a bad one or more. I'll replace the bad ones and see if the smell improves.

If it doesn't fix my problem, I'll start looking to buy a new catalytic converter. The expense of O2 sensors will not go to waste since it's recommended to replace them when changing the cat anyway. Anyone know what I should expect to pay for a catalytic converter?

Dealer MSRP on the federal cat is $1500. You can find them for just over a grand brand new. The ***** of it is that you live in California and have to go with OEM style equiptment. I paid $60 for my 3" cat.

The best way to know the reason for your check engine light is to read the code. In my case, I'm getting a code 71 - EGR system malfunction. I don't think it is related to my smelly exhaust, but I plan to get it fixed anyway. Who wants their CEL on right?
