Default new to forum...question about a leaking rear seal

Hello everyone. Need your help. Just recent got a 93 GS300 with 203K miles on it after my brother totaled my SC . I know high miles but dude only wanted $2k for it so I figured I'd take a chance. Anyway, right away noticed an oil leak and had all the front seals changed. But leak is now coming from the rear seal so that needs to be replaced. My question is that I've noticed the car has trouble engaging into drive on a cold start. After I rev it a little and like a 2 sec delay, it will then kick into drive. Could this be related to the bad rear seal? Thanks.

You are probably low on trans fluid. Trans fluid expands when it's heated so you may not have enough to engage the converter at low temps.

Did you check it with the engine running? There is no filter in the trans, just a screen.

yeah...checked it while engine ran...no filter you say? Thanks for that tidbit of info. I'll try a temporary fix, like a sealer/conditioner as I save up $$$ for a rear seal replacement.

Instead of using some sealer I would clean the engine very well so that you can see exactly where the leak is coming from and i would also just Drain and fill the tranny fluid. When you checked the tranny fluid what color was it??Was it nice cherry red or brown almost like engine oil?Drain and fill is very easy and only requires 2 1/2 quarts Toyota TYPE IV fluid to fill once drained..I change the tranny fluid every 3k miles until the fluid is cherry red..

Like Johnee said, don't flush it. On a 200k+ trans 8 qts of new fluid may be too viscus to handle and cause the trans to slip.

Well, I took rest of the day off and decided I would at least change the trans fluid. Drained it from the plug, which by the way was stripped but not leaking...go figure (I could unscrew it with my hand) and noticed the fluid was brown. Evidently, it was due for a change. How many more miles should I go before changing it again? And yes, I'm going to pick up a replacement plug now...

Just drain it when you change your oil.
