The Italian designer Guigaro has a long and storied career of designing some of the most famous cars in the world. Frankly it's the second gen that looks generic with obvious influences from the 1st gen, and SC 400 - one of lexus all time masterful designs. Frankly I'd like to see toyota make small styling changes to each generation GS so the family resemblances remain intack, instead of each generation looking different with no design heritage.

I think you are contradicting yourself here. If the SC is a masterful design, and that design was incorporated into the GS, how is the GS generic?
I agree the proportions are not spot-on, but anyone should be able to admit it has a unique style with dual heads/tails.

I love mod'd 1st gens, but when I see a stock one I just feel sad, haha.

BTW, shartGTS, Lexus started the dual headlights before Merc, I get sick of hearing that argument time and time again.

i closely 360'd the Jaguar XF sedan today- in real life. I was at the dealership again(picking up the LR3). every seam, every crease, the front, the back ,the roof line, the rockers, bumper covers, the flares, the wells, the arcs, the straight lines, exhaust, lights different angles - this design has a unique character and flows artisically and logically. it's very tidy. the concept XF is really sic. OK it's 2009 and makers are busting out all sorts of winners for design - (including Hyundai/KIA), but i'd put this one near the top if not on top of the heap. same goes for the 3-GS saw one and it's really nice. bangle's bimmers are very cool too.

So applying the same artistic rulz or conditions to the Gen2 car i get things that just don't compute or add up. I started sketching the Gen2 car - i need to do more work on it - but the proportions of the Gen2 are very good in fact. It's just a optical illusion that they are not. I'd be curious to see the body of work that the designer of Gen2 has done and where he/they are now. The Gen2 car did very well for lexus and i tried to find one today but could not!! there must be 100 infiniti's and nissans for every lexus in Victoria, i'll say that.

The new jag sedan is truly a beautiful design but Jaguar always excelled in the style dept, akin to BMW excelling at handling. Anyways to clarify the front end of the GS second gen is clearly influenced by the SC. But the rest of the proportions of this car look ungainly. Is it faster than the first gen? obviously, handles better? yes. but more elegant? I don't think so. In my humble opinion. Also realize that Lexus wanted to create a bad boy image of this car, and in this respect it succeeded very well, since the car lasted eight model years.

How is that possible Merc has been making those before Lexus even had an L in front. Even W123 mercedes had dual headlights in early 80's lol.

I'd been looking for an affordable 2nd gen for my wife for a while, but the prices were still fairly high. Started looking at the 1st gens more and we both liked the way they look way more than the 2nd, especially when they're done up. We both hated the squatty trunk look on the 2nd gen, it looks way too short for such a big car! The 1st gen isn't as bad, especially with a wangan or duck tail spoiler on the bck

The lines of the 2GS and 1 GS have held up amazingly well, but the 3GS is hands down the best looking imo. I am biased of course

1st
3rd
2nd

1st gen and 3rd gen are interchangeable as Lexus went back to the first gen body style with the 3rd gen (long and wide) as opposed to the 2nd gen (round and bubble looking)

3GS with mods is a great looking car and without, it's a bit boring. All 3 generations are like that, though. Nice looking car, I8ABMR.
