Sway / Wag in rear of car?
Ok, I'm looking for some ideas on what to look at. I have a '96 GS300 with 155K which has a random side to side sway or wag in the rear. It's more noticable at higher speeds and gets worse with weight in the trunk.
Here's what's been done so far:
1. Replaced rear shocks
2. Replaced sway bar end links and sway bar to chassis bushings. They all had some play.
3. Replaced the strut (traction) bars. Bushings had some play and wear.
4. Swapped wheels to eliminate any related problems with tires or bends.
The problem got a little better after doing #2 above but was still there. The problem got much worse after doing #3 above. I'm guessing this is because the old bushings on the strut arms had some play and was compensating for some of the motion. I can't feel play anywhere else.
Questions:
1. Which control arms control the side to side motion? My best guess at this point is there must be play in one of the ball joints.
2. Is there any way a worn u-joint or diff mounts could cause this type of issue?? I do have a clunk when going into reverse so I'm sure the u-joint has some wear but my experience has usually been these cause a vibration when going bad. I don't have any vibrations.
Thanks!
