distributor o ring replacement
has anyone here replaced there distributor o ring? I am getting a small oil leak coming out from the distrubutor. Is this a hard task to do? Anyone know if there is a write up on it? I know that marking the rotor and distributor shaft is crucial for timing?

I did this a few months ago and it is not hard to do. Its the same procedure as in the SC300 GE engine...

do you have to take off the bolts holding the heat shield before removing the distributor cap? I took off the 3 bolts for the cap and damn f-er wouldn't budge and come off.

I didn't take off that shield. My distributor cap was on there pretty tight as well. I just kept wiggling it, but be careful. The first time I removed it on my SC I yanked up too hard and it cracked part of the distributor rotor off as I took it off. Fortunately it was something I was replacing at the same time anyways. Try unplugging some of the wires.

so basically. first thing is to disconnect battery cables. wait 90 secs. then take off the wires. remove the 3 bolts for the cap. take off cap. mark off the rotor and distributor shaft/helical gear location. the one main bolt next to the thermostat housing is for taking off the distributor right? I will probably try taking a crack at it again today. Tried yesterday and could not get the darn cap off.

Yea u got it right. Once you take off the last bolt just pull and wiggle on the distributor. Removing the 3 bolts is for the distributor housing o-ring. Taking the entire thing out is how you replace the shaft o-ring which is probably whats leaking.

When you take off the distributor, inspect the inside of the distributor. It's actually common for oil to leak from the inside of the distributor then dribble it's way down to the heat shield. If your heat shield has oil on it, it's coming from the distributor.
I'm pretty sure I've seen a DIY article on this very topic, somewhere on the forum.
