96 GS300 Gas Problem
#16
ive looked through this thread and i cant remember if im supposed to use 5w-30 or 10w-30 im guessing since i live in miami and the heat 10w-30 would be good but does that lead to more sludge buildup?? not sure or is it just down to personal preference
The reason I ask is because when i used to take it in for oil changes when ever they drained the oil it was like water so thin and black i know that cant be good or is that normal? I dont even drive a lot and i change my oil every 3 months

I don't remember what options the manual specifies for oil weights, but I know 10w/30 is one of them. That's what I use. I have owned my car for 8 years and I have not observed the oil even being completely black when I change the oil. There is is always at least some amber to it. I change the oil every 4,000 miles. I recently had the opportunity to inspect the block, piston tops, and cylinder bores and everything was surprisngly clean for a car that had 173K on the clock at the time. I might start with doing oil changes more frequently to see if that resolves the appearance of sludge when you drain old oil.
