Default Fuel gauge question

I have searched what I can and all the posts I've seen so far are of people with fuel gauges spiking up and down or whatever. I'm looking at a 93 GS with a single turboed USDM 2jz-gte in it and it's fuel gauge reads zero. The tach and speedo did too and the guy smacked the dash and they sprang to life, but the fuel gauge still read zero. I would think smacking the dash would fix that, but who knows. The car also has dual Supra pumps in the tank. Is it common for some people to "ghetto rig" that particular setup sometimes and lose the function of the fuel level sender or something? If I pick the car up I'll pull the dash cluster and double check all the connections on the board, and check the security of the pins themselves in the plastic sockets that connect to the board, but thought I'd see if anyone else has had this problem with dual Supra pumps and maybe could lend me some extra information.

Hello, anyone there? Getting closer to a deal and just curious if anyone's had the problem with the actual fuel sender being the problem rather than the gauge itself.
