freeing up hp by switching to electrical fan.
I just noticed that my 94 gs300 has a belt driven fan. I've read that belt driven fans can swollow up as much as 10-12 hp. My friend switched from belt driven to electrical fan in his 96 chevy caprice and it did make a difference. Anyone try this yet?

gompka,
even if you eliminate the belt driven fan you will still require a serpentine belt to drive the water pump, power steering and a/c. i don't think it would give a significant power increase but may start to complicate things for you...just a thought.

Older cars have belt fans that don't have very good clutches, therefore, the fan would suck power from the engine when the fan is not needed, hence, the 10hp increase. Our cars have an electromagnetic clutch that disengages the fan when the temperature of the engine is normal, therefore the fan will free-wheel except when needed. An electric fan, when installed, will turn-on when the engine reaches a certain temperature, but will suck alternator power when on, hence, loss of engine power at the same time our belt driven fan will consume engine power. The power increase from switching to an electric fan is negligible if none at all, and I don't think is worth the change.
