Default Power of 1st gen w/ 5-sped vs. 98 gs300

Is there a difference in acceleration between the 1st gen gs with a 5 speed auto-trans versus the 98 gs300? There should not be much of a difference because both have a 5-speed and V-VTI, and the weight difference can account for maybe a difference of 2-10ths of a second in the 1/4 mile.

i would assume it to be very close. but the wear on the older engine may play a big role.

The 1st gen GS300's did not have VVT-I, that came out on the MKII GS300 in '98. 1st gens had 220hp vs. 225 in the '98 GS300(then lowered back to 220hp). The '98+ GS300's have around 161RWHP('93-'97's had slightly less). '98 GS300's weigh in at 3638lbs(curb). 1st gens curb weight is 3660lbs. Lexus Corporate claims a .7/ .6 difference(0-60/ 1/4 mile) between the MKI/ MKII GS300.

.6-.7 second difference is quite significant because the vvt-i really only makes the engine more flexible. The 5hp increase should account for maybe .1 second advantage while the advantage from a 42lb weight difference should be negligible.

Is the vvt-i engine THAT much better?
