Default Fuel filter: changed how often?

How often should the fuel filter be changed? I had a Mustang and the filter had to be changed every 30k. Our owners manual is silent on this issue. Additionally, some Lexus mechanics say it doesn't need to be changed (obviously, a misguided opinion). Having a clogged fuel filter reduces the fuel flow under wide open throttle and high rpms, and hence, loss of full power. Can anyone shed light on this issue?

I think the filter should run no more than $15. It isn't too hard to change, just a remove/replace job.

Hello,

I'm not a GS owner, but I recently had my fuel filter changed on my 90 LS. I got the filter from Carson toyota (wasn't expensive at all) and opted to have the delear install it.

From what others had mentioned, it's probably better to let the dealer do it becuase they know how to shut off the electronic fuel pump otherwise gas will leak all over. Some also suggested to just let the engine run dry on gas, but the car manual specfically mentions this can cause catalytic convertor damage.

The dealer should change NO MORE than a half hour of labor. They took about 10 minutes to change mine. My Lex dealer charged $80 per hour, so I only paid $40 plus filter cost.

Lvangundy, how did the new fuel filter affect the operation of your car?
