Default A way to id which lifters go where?

When I took my head off the engine I sat it upside down for like 10 seconds and all the valve lifters slipped out and got mixed up, I know they're not marked (at least from what I could tell) but the guy at the machine shop said that they go in a specific order, is there any way to figure out which go where? He said otherwise he'd have to sit there and measure the distance from the cams with a feeler gauge to put them in the correct order, so is there a way???

So measuring the distance with the feeler gauge is the only way?
