Maybe this info will be helpful to anyone who sometimes has steering wheel shimmy and shaking that comes and goes for no apparent reason. My 18 inch wheels and tires are new and I thought that after 5,000 miles there was a rebalance job needed. However, this problem did not occur all the time. Sometimes the car ran smooth as silk.
I jacked the front end off the ground and did a visual inspection, which revealed nothing. When I grabbed the wheel and tried to spin it, there was an unusual amount of resistance. There should be a slight resistance as the brake pads are all the time resting against the rotors (Duh). The other wheel was the same way. I proceeded to remove the wheels and then the brake calipers. Sure enough, one of the 2 pistons would not go in, even with the cap off of the brake fluid reservoir. I have a set of Vice grips with a huge rounded jaw on it and I eventually worked the piston in all the way (this was the same problem on both front wheels.) After working both of them in, I gently applied brake pedal pressure to push them both out all the way out. I then opened the brake bleed and worked them in again, this time letting the brake fluid out the bleeder in case it was contaminated. I did this procedure twice.
After putting everything back I road tested it. The 1st time I hit the gas, I could feel better acceleration as now the brake dragging was released. AND... NO MORE SHIMMY AND SHAKIN' GOING ON ! I now remember that I worked on another gs300 last year with the same shimmy and with the same problem. Since this has occured on a 93 gs300 and a 94 gs300 I thought this might be helpful information and maybe a common occurance. Maybe this could also be the reason for brake squealing ????
