Telescopic steering wheel question..
hey guys,
Jmai22 told me that when you use the telescopic wheel and it goes in and out, it wears off.
I really want to set it so it moves back and forth( i am not comfortable with it going up and down), but I am afraid of it wearing off.
Have you guys had any bad experiences with it such as it having to be replaced? Can someone please validate Jmai22's input?
thanks

I disabled mine because I was afraid it woud go out. My dad had the car before me and he did have it repaired. The motor and the gears might wear out, but you would not have to replace the whole steering wheel!
Someone posted up a "quick fix" on fixing the gears a LONG time ago. It was for an LS or something, if yours ever breaks you can try something like that guy did.

The up and down movement are really strong and they usually don't wear down. its the in and out motion that normally wears down really quick. i'm not sure if it uses oil or gears to move in and out but it just seems like there is a lot of mechanical movement back there when i move mine in and out once in a while

I have a 96, how do you disable the auto up/and away?? I do not want mine to wear down, and it is on the same fuse as something important, so I cant just pull it.

DGOT20's,
Not sure, but its either the button is pushed in or out. You will know if its off, the wheel will not move. There is a button that is on the side of the steering wheel(where the long part is), on the left.

Thats my problem, in 96, they took the disable button away, when you look beside the square button, there is just a blank space. I noticed that when I was car shopping that they took it out of the 96 LS too, so I though I could pull something out, or pull something in the column loose to disable it manually!

I use mine everyday, and it does make a crazy noice. Thank God I stil have an aftermarket warranty. I will just have to go to the most expensive dealership and get it fixed (get my money back).

Well if it helps at all, mine makes a real loud squealing noise when it trys to move outwards. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldnt. So I set it where I liked it and left it. I always wondered what was wrong with it and if it was an easy fix or not but Ive had more important things to do that I still haven't gotten around to it. I want to get it working again because it like to sit a little close as far as my legs go so the telescoping/lift function is really useful to me.

Damn, I hope this thread gets revived. I am having a problem with my telescopic option. I got a 96. My up and down works well but I want to be able to go in and out. It makes a small noise like the motor is working but the steering wheel just isn't moving. I read somewhere that it might be something wrong with the telescopic ecu? or some sensor. I don't even know where the telescopic ecu is. Does anyone know a fix for this?
Here's the thread I got some info from.
