Default How do I know when my oil is at operating temperature so I can drive spiritedly?

Hey all,

So I've always gone off the coolant temperature to know when I can comfortably push the car past 2k rpms. But oil takes longer to heat up than coolant so I am wondering how am I supposed to know when my oil is up to a good operating temperature? Afaik, there's no oil temp gauge anywhere. Should I hook up an OBD scanner when I drive lol
TIA

Well, according to Scotty Kilmer 😉, new modern cars and oils do not require a warm up time really. But just to be sure, you should go to the oil manufacturers website to see what they say about viscosity at various temps.

Realistically there's only 3 choices you have:

1 Install an aftermarket oil temp sensor

2 Decide on an amount of time (e.g. 15 minutes or something like that) that you feel like the car needs to get the oil up to temp and wait for the time to pass on every drive before pushing the car, you can make an educated guess by asking people who actually have oil temp sensors what temps they are reading after X amount of time

3 Realize that you and thousands of others never destroyed an engine before by pushing it while oil was not perfect temp yet but water already was, and stop overthinking and just read off the coolant temp, if it was that important the sensor would have been installed from the factory
