Default E shift .....HELP!....

Hey Guys...

Wondering if anyone else is having problems with their e shift. I put it into M on the shifter and on my instrument gauge, it give me a blinking "M" and my e shift doesn't work... My trans wont stay in second gear either... even if I put the shifter into 2nd...

I live on a hill and using gearing helps to brake....However when I put it in second it just shifts up to 3rd or 4th... Kind of suck...

I've tried to reset the computer... but that didn't worked...

It's a 1998 GS 400 with 78K miles...

Any help would be appreciated....Thanks in advanced!

Default E Shift Problems

Hello,
I want to ask a question.....was the transmission cold or warm? The reason I asked was because there is a computerized protection system for the transmission.

If the transmission fluid is less than 120 degrees, the e shift will not go below 3rd gear. Pressing the down button will result in a "beep" until the engine and transmission warm up.

Once warm, the transmission should shift normally using e shift. The transmission will not stay in 1st gear to protect against over revving, but will shft up to 2nd.

However, if you have a blinking M light, perhaps you need to service your transmission.
1 How long has it been since the fluid was changed?
2. What is the condition of the transmission fluid?
3. Did this problem JUST start, or has it been ongoing?
4. Does the transmission work normally if the selector is left in "drive".
5. Many problems are the result of fluid level (over-full or low)

Good Luck,
GSEREP1

a blinking M....i've never seen that before...

I would have the dealer check it out.....a damaged transmission can be some serious $$$. Is your car still under warranty?

It will automatically shift when it reaches redline. I originally asked this question when the TL was redesigned, then asked the Lexus person when I test drove the GS. He said to try it and find out. That's how I know.
On the other side, e-shift will NOT allow you to downshift if it will redline. I accidently tried to downshift from 3rd (was supposed to upshift) and got a BEEP and was unable to do this, luckily.

That is very interesting, for the past 6 years with my GS 400 other than 1st gear whatever gear i am in is what it will stay in. Sometimes I forget to upshift from 2nd and all it does is bounce off the limtiter. My shifting pattern is that by 90 km/h I have to shift to 3rd, 160 km/h I must shift to 4th, and well I usually shift to 5th at 200 km/h but one time I upshifted at 200 and It did not go into 5th untill I hit somewhere over 220 km/h, I dont know for sure because at that speed i was consentrating more on the road.
