Wow talk about an old thread brought back to life.

Torque is definately the way to go.

How about the new mercedes E320CDI?
369 lb of torque at 1800rpm, extra urban mpg of 39 and urban 28.
780 miles on one tank and absolutely no smoke on startup, no clatter or smell.
0-60 mph at 6.6s
Now thats a nice piece of machinery especially with gas prices the way they are!

actually, if I was rich, I'd have a GS430 and an S2000 - torque and hp are both good, but whats even more important is overall car ballance.

For example, 3.8 GM engine is a POS - it hasn't got either.

I vote horsepower but more specifically POWER.

Most people do not know what torque (force) or HP, kW (power) is.

What virtually everyone on this post is refering to WHERE in the power band the POWER is made.

Torque like power is a measurement. As pointed out earlier you can have force without power... BUT... you can multiply force... you cannot multiply power. In an internal combustion engine that ONLY produces torque WHILE the engine is actually RUNNING... there is NO separating TQ and HP. There is a TQ and HP rating at every and any RPM point.

So, the question really becomes, what do you want, low RPM power or high RPM power?

Let me elaborate.

There is NO such THING as torque without horsepower in an internal combustion engine (ICE). You cannot vote for one or the other. You can only vote for WHERE in the RPM range you want the POWER.

Here is a hint: they call the engine the POWER plant.

Revisit my earlier statement: you can multiply torque but you can NOT multiply power.

So, give a fixed power and with gearing I can give you nearly unlimited torque.

The famous line "give me a lever large enough and I could move the world".

This is WHY a CVT (continuously variable transmission) operates at peak POWER not peak torque.

Now, the final kicker, if you increase torque, as so many believe is the best, you have also increased power. You simply cannot have one without the other in an ICE.

Interesting note on torque:

Electric motors have flat torque, meaning they have the same torque at zero rpm that they have at their maximum speed.

This may make the 450h more fun in traffic.
