Default Rear Doors

I have a 98 GS400. When I open either rear door the interior light never comes on. The light comes on when I open the front doors. Also, when the engine is running and I open the rear doors, there is never a warning indicator.

Where is the door switch on the rear doors? Is there something else I should check?

Thanks,

Neil

The door switches are built into the doors. I would definately recommend you get it checked if you drive kids around. This can be a very dangerous situation.

I'm not sure about the fuses...you may want to check the user's manual. One switch going bad is possible...but both going bad would be a rare occurence. I would tend to think this is more of an electrical problem. Do the rear lights turn on manually when you depress the local buttons?

The switch is located in the lock assembly on each door. For a time, Lexus was replacing all of the early defective units with updated units free of charge as it is a common problem. Mine lights go on after some delay. I may just clean the contacts when I have time since it is a 2 hour job for each door.

I've got the same problem in both rear doors. Try manually turning on the ovehead light using the switch next to the roof grab handles. Do it with the door open. If the light comes on, then turn off the switch. On my car if you do this the light will come on and stay on until you close the door. That's just a work around I use until I get the switches replaced.

Default Rear Door Lights

Wow. It seems I am not the only one with this problem. The lights near the rear grab handles do work. I think I will call Lexus about this to see if they can help. To me, this could be a huge safety issue for them if someone could potentially drive off with the one or both rear doors open as the are no working warning indicators.

Thanks..
