Default Retro fitting E-shift to pre-01 GS 300's?

I'm sure the transmission is the same 5 speed auto, so I was wondering if it is possible to swap out an ECU or something and install the E-shift wheel and be set to go?

Has anyone ever done done this, or know if it's possible?

TIA

...might wat to ask this in the engine / transmision section. But a quick guess I would say its easier to buy a vehicle with e-shift rather than try to convert.....

While I don't know anyone that's done this, remember there is more than just the wheel and ECU involved.

The gearshift and pattern indicator is different as well to shift into 'M'anual mode
The display is different "M / gear indicator" which may display OK with the ECU shift, but I don't know

I believe when someone else asked this question in the past (please use the search feature and you may find it), one of the Lexus techs chipped in and said that the airbag was also different in the two models and it would not work. I think the newer airbag version has different 'stages' or something.

I did use the search feature and came across little information. I saw the post you mentioned regarding the different staged air bags, however if I recall that post was for putting it in a 01+ GS 430, which I can imagine would involve more swapping than from a 300 to a 300.

I also posted in Engine/Trans 2 weeks ago to no avail.

I asked this question a while back but never got an answer.
I am still interested to know though.

I suspect the issues you face will be exactly the same moving from old version 300 to new version 300 on the airbag and pretty much everything except for the a closer match in ECU since the engine didn't change as dramatically if you have to swap the entire ECU (about $1k).

Personally, I'd buy a newer car with the e-shift wheel before I did all that would be required.

Why couldn't I just use a 98-00 GS400 steering wheel? They would have been the same airbag AND had the E-shift as well...?

It's not going to make or break the car for me, I just thought it would be nice to have.

Have you ever driven a GS with e-shift ? Please see what was mentioned above, IMO would also likely need:

Gearshift assembly (can't side shift into 'm' to use the steering wheel shifters without it)
ECU from e shift car (potentially... possibly from 01+GS3)
Dash indicator for 'm'anual mode and gear (if you want it to complete the stock setup)

If you want to be first to do it... have at it Take lots of pictures and notes to share your experience.

No actually I haven't but, now that I have seen them. Your right about the shift pattern and dash indicators. That seems like way too much of a hassle to do.

Just thought I'd ask.

Guess that idea's out the window.

Thanks all!
