I son't believe the price has gone up $8K since '98. My car loaded with have was over $50K new. I am not sure of the total price since I bought it preowned, but I know it was. I believe the ML option is $2k itself, so that is not really an increase, just an add on. Please show us your documentation showing your price increase.
My number had come from comparing the 540 from back then to last year, but i think the 540 had more available options than the GS.

And yes you are correct you could only get one or the other back then. I still wanted both. you telling me the nav is worth 5 grand? ML isnt worth teh dif from the nakamichi system..ill tell u that.
