I thought that this product would be "funny." Does anyone actually have this in their car? (Just in case you happen to fall into the trunk and lock yourself in? Someone decides to car-knap the Lexus and take you along?)

i'm not sure bout the gs, but i was pretty sure the new LS430 had it?
and i'm sure the "S" class in benz has them. also in the benz i heard
that the trunk light stays on for an extra 60 min after it's closed.
this was all designed for car-knap. this may not be such an issue
here in usa, but in other countries it is.
benz website:
"Emergency trunk release, located inside trunk and illuminated for 60
minutes after trunk lid is closed."

I have it!
I guess it's a big problem, or big enough for the manufactures to include it.
I think the manufactures are watching to much television.
Locked in the trunk...

it's meant for kids. It's not too much tv watching it si real...a few years back some kids were playing hide and seek and one kid decided to hide in the trunk of the car. No one found him, but it was summertime and the temperatures in the trunk exceeded 100 degrees. The child was found dead, noone had any idea that he was in there and he couldn't get himself out.
It's the same reasoning for why they tell you to remove the door from your refrigerator when you leave it at the curb for trash pickup. I think the 01 GS (I know for sure) and up has it, but I also thought there was a retrofit TSB that was done for earlier models. The handle in the GS actually glows in the dark. This is a governement requirement nowadays.

BTW, how much did this option cost? I found out there was a Lexus recall in March 01. I found an article about a woman who got locked in her trunk during a robbery. She then worked on getting a law passed to have the safety feature mandatory in cars. Apparently, her work paid off, manufacturers now have this option on many models.

We don't really need to delve on this, guys. Really, how often do people get entrapped in their trunks. I just found this safety feature amusing.

yes... and now hopefully every car will have an onstar type system.
then you can just call onstar on your cell and tell them
"i'm locked in my trunk, kill the engine and pop the trunk, and call the police... etc..."
maybe even tell them to kill the engine but keep the doors locked. that would be funny.
anyhow not suggesting anything, just saying with the new technology we'll have more options
and what not.

Hehehe....The trunk has a lot of space, but not much space for "other things" that you may be referring to. Unless you're Emmanuel Lewis (Webster) with a midget partner.
