Question Clunking sound when shifting from Park to Drive

It happens occasionally and it seems to occur when the car is cold. Is this normal? Its not a very loud clunk..but it definelty does clunk. Not every time either. Just occasionally. should i be worried? I have not modded anything in the drive train (i.e. torque convertor, lsd). thanks

when's the last time the car had its tranny fluid flushed?

sometimes when the tranny fluid is dirty, it'll cause hard
shifts between gear selections and between gear to gear shifts...

well, when i brought it to the dealer w/ 39k miles..the tranny fluid was very clean and still red. he said it looked like it had its 30k flush and fill. it only occurs when switching from park to drive or reverse to drive. it doesnt click during driving

Do those cars have universal joints? Sure sounds like that old problem.

I get the same noise I was thinking mabye it is coming from the differential. Just my opinion.

I second that. It could also be from A/T engaging with the torque converter (via a quick ATF fluid flow). It only happens during shifts from P to R or R to D (esp. when the car is cold), I wouldn't worry about it. Others get the same noise.

Does it have something to do with how much pressure is being put on the transmission at "P" when being moved to "R" Is it true the emergency brake takes pressure off the parking mechanism?
