Default AIRFLOW

Hello,
You may have a problem in your dash, or you may have made a dash adjustment by mistake. Immediately, a few things come to my mind.. Press the "MODE" button on the dash and select the "face" level. I get airflow to the face whether the engine is running or not, as long as the ignition switch is in the "ON" position, "face" is selected, and the fans are running. The MODE button directs airflow to wherever you designate it to go, regardless of whether the AUTO button is pushed or not. The AUTO button maintains a certain temperature as set by the driver, and will cycle the air conditioning and heating systems to keep the cabin at that temperature.

Don't forget to try the "defrost" position, and see if the air switches to the windshield. If this happens, then one can assume that the vacuum is working fine. If you can only get air on the floor, chances are you have a defective door motor , or not getting the proper signal from the A/C module. This may require dealere intervention

By the way, our cars have ABS, and that system has its' own pressurized system complete with motor. This is not like the old system that uses engine vacuum for the brakes, and to open and close the A/C/heater registers. I forgot, and tried to bleed all the vacuum from the braking system by stepping on the brakes with the engine off. All I got was the VSC ABS and VSC OFF warning lights, and beeping signal to let me know that the brakes were inoperative due to loss of pressure. Once I released the brakes, the ABS motor re-started, and re-pressurized the ABS system. The lights all went out when things went back to normal.

I will have to check my service manual to see just what makes those doors in the dash open and close once the buttons on the dash are pushed.

Try the tips listed above and see if you can narrow it down.

Good luck!

Post hmmmm...

i dont think that you have a problem with your system. i have never been to alabama, but its REALLY cold where i live (NJ). if you higher the temp. of the system to get warmer air, the air flow will go down to the feet (the way heat is supposed to work). now since i WANT my heat to come on, the air flow automatically flows down. once the warm weather comes around and you lower the temp you want in the car, it will gradually come back up and blow on your face. so i dont think you have anything to worry about, except for this COOOOOOOOOOLD weather.
