With the door off, I could unscrew the outer sleeve of the lighter, remove the nut on the bottom and the power connector, and then remove the lighter altogether.

What I thought I might do is relocate the lighter socket to the side toward me (the driver) so I could still use it for a cell phone adapter for example.

After much cursing, drilling and filing, I relocated the lighter.

Another shot. I haven't put it in the car yet, but it should work.

Tomorrow I plan to go buy a Dremel tool so I can give the SAFC-II a better way to 'sit' in the ashtray. I'll also figure out a way to direct the wire that comes out the right side of the SAFC-II. Ideally I'd like to be able to do this in a way that I can still close the ashtray. We'll see.

Great mods Paul!!
I really like your way of thinking in mounting the SAFC-II and still keeping the lighter socket!!

Very nice bit.

Like Richie said above....really nice that you're keeping the power socket!

Thanks guys. I put it back in and it works great. I've taken it back out and I also bought the Dremel tool today (I went with cordless, hopefully it works well) so I can make the SAFC-II fit well. I'm learning a lot!

Bit,

Keep the Dremel below 3k rpm, otherwise, it will melt the plastic while you're cutting.

Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the final product.

Wish I'd read this before I started, I learned about the melting plastic, hehe. No problem though.

Anyway, it looks like my moving the lighter outlet might be the stupidest mod in history because you can't plug anything into it when it's back in the car anyway. I may have to find another plan.

But hey, nothing lost - there were 'learnings'.

Bit, great mod. I am confused as to why it wont work, it looks like you have plenty of room to plug something into?

Wow man, your still alive? Thought you fled the internet or something ! LOL

Back on topic, Bit, is the problem the console area once you put the tray back in? (reason the lighter is null and void?)
