Exclamation Getting ready to run my stock GS400 at the track with a lot of people watching. Help!

Tomorrow I'm going to be making my first pass down a 1/4-mile drag strip, period.

There's going to be several f-body owners (camaro, firebird, etc... I used to own one so I'm a participating member on an f-body forum because I used to own one and still hang around there) watching to see what kind of time I pull off. A lot of smack talking has been going on so the performance anxiety is high. No I haven't been smack talking... basically over there ( camaroz28.com ) they think that a GS4 is a dog and is in no way capable of running with a stock 93-96 LT1 Z28... I keep telling them I don't know about my driving skill and my car but your average GS4 off the street vs your average LT1 off the street... should be a darned close race with the LT1 getting the nod below 100 and the GS4 getting the nod above 100.

Anyhow... so now I need tips for my best run.

I'm running stock 16" wheels with Bridgestone Turanza LS-V tires... how much should I air down the rear tires to? Should I leave traction control off or on? Should I shift manually or just let it do all the work? I guess I should turn it on "pwr" mode, and turn the A/C off right? Should I remove the spare tire and such? Any other dead weight I could remove or any other slight modifications I could do to make it run better? I just changed my air filter which was very dirty, so that should help.

I have mods, but they are all suspension mods... no power mods. I basically have to pull off at LEAST a 14.3x @ 98.x MPH... what are my odds?

From my limited experience.
I'm running stock 16" wheels with Bridgestone Turanza LS-V tires...**** good, do NOT go through the water go around it.
Should I leave traction control off or on? ***off
Should I shift manually or just let it do all the work? *** leave it in automatic mode
guess I should turn it on "pwr" mode, and turn the A/C off right? *** absolutely
Should I remove the spare tire and such? *** Absolutely remove the spare, jack etc (get AAA ) Can remove back seat as well. Floor mats, anything helps.
Any other dead weight I could remove or any other slight modifications I could do to make it run better? ** reset the ECU earlier in the day and drive it hard, show up with 1/4 or less tank of good gas.

Power brake / torque launch slightly but not too much. Without a LSD your one wheel will start spinning on a slippery track and you'll do nothing but hit your rev limiter and create a lot of smoke for the spectators.

Man Man Man first time at the track with the GS I don't think its gonna happen...(14.3) It can be done with practice but you need to learn your car first. I ran my best stock 14.4 on my 17s so it can be done. First off lose all the weight you can off of the car not you...LOL jack , spare , floor mats. then make sure you have about a 1/4 tank NOT FULL. I think I was @ 24 psi on the 17s so its safe to least go down to that, I launch at 1500 rpms and worked my way up...it depends on how the prep the track. Also I have a couple of ways I shift but for you I would just put it in 3 and stay there all the way thur the 1/4 it CAN BE DONE some members same they have shift but I aways made it thur the 1320 mark with out switching up to another gear. Also don't worry about the car next to you you are there to get a time better know as Test N Tune your clock does not start until you leave off the line. Let me know if there is anything else I can try to help you with. I do have me notes at home...( I wrote down every rpm launch I did )

Yeah... what RPM should I torque-brake and launch from on my stock 16s. I know it totally depends on my tires and the track but I'd like to have a rough idea.

I would brake TQ as much as you can without breaking traction! Then just relax and learn your car your first go down. It takes time to learn your throttle response and traction. Also there is always one side of the track that seems to be better than the other side...ask some of the guys there I'm sure they know which side it is..

Good Luck!!!

14.795@95.52 was my best of 3 runs... didn't really do much fancy.

I was definitely hoping for better.

I know that ETs depend on driver skill/launch, but trap speed is pretty much dependent on the car's power and very little else, and since most of you guys seem to trap around 97-101 MPH, I'm kind of wondering what's up with my car.

Then again most of the LS1 f-bodies were running 13.9 to 14.9 when they supposedly usually run 12.9 to 13.5, and most of the SRT4 neons were running 14.5 to 15.1 when they supposedly usually run 13.8-14.3... so maybe it was just a bad night at the track... or maybe everybody BSes about track times these days.

Hey so tell us more about that nite......ie how much gas did you have, what did you remove from the car?, where did you set your tire pressure and what rpm did you lauch at. Also what was your 60ft.

R/T .613
60' 2.309
330' 6.346
1/8th mile 9.610
MPH 76.72
1000' 12.425
1/4-mile 14.795 @ 95.52

Tires @ 25 psi in rear, launch was right around 1700 RPM which is, I think, as high of RPM as I could get to without spinning the tires at a standstill.

My low fuel light was on and my spare tire was removed.

I didn't reset the ECU like people were telling me to though (by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and then driving it hard). I did notice even with it floored all the way, the tranny was only shifting at about 6000 RPM... it didn't go to redline.

Your 60ft can get better... Traction is the key! Also what gear did you drive it in...D or did you stick it in 3? I shaved a tenth off by sticking it in 3 vs D

a general rule of thumb, about each tenth of a second you shave off your 60' time, you'll shave nearly two tenths in the quarter....
