1998 Navigation software update to sept. 2003

For anyone wanting to update thier 98-2000 Navigation software the price is only ~$350.00 from the dealership. I updated the software on my 98 GS400 and I have to say I am very very NOT impressed.
I was in the process of buying an SC430 a few months ago and expected the sept. 03 update to have the same map detail as the 2003 SC430, it does not.
I live in a city where I can only zoom in to 1/4 mile that has not changed with the update, for anyone in the same situation you have to change to the next generation of navigation systems in order to fully upgrade to the same map details as you may see driving an LS430 or SC430.
1998 1st gen
2001 2nd gen
2001 3rd gen
2004 4th gen
Hope this helps someone,
Ibrahim

Well you must live in a small town. No way a 98 nav can have the same detail as an SC430 because the latter uses a DVD system and completely different hardware.
I've upgraded my hard drive nav (like yours) a few times and I'm pleased because more new subdivisions, restaurants, and other details are added, but I live in a big city.

I found Sept. 03 version to have more details for my area than the previous version. In addition, it is a free upgrade under basic warranty so I can't complaint.

Very true, I did notice a little difference in Orlando but the smaller cities Panama City, Ocala, Tyler Tx places I've lived had no change in the detail, they remained at 1/4 mile zoom. Whereas the 2002 Navigations show complete detail on the maps for those areas.
Basically, if you're updating your maps expecting to have the same roads show up as an LS430 or SC430 they wont, its the same navigation with updates not improvements.

It's not always free - you might get one free upgrade with a GS (I did).

My dealer told me for 98 and 99 hard drive based Nav, you got 2 free upgrade which is not depended on the warrenty. even you got a used car but the previous owner didn't use all the 2 free upgrade, you still can use what the previous owner left over.
I got my 98 updated 1 and half years ago, and when I did my service manager told me I still got once free update left.
For all those DVD based Nav, I have no idea.
