Hi,
I am in the same boat as you. I am in the process of purchasing a used Lexus from a private owner. He is selling his car for the same price as if he would trade it in to the Lexus dealer. That amounts to almost 6K in certification costs. What I did was have the Lexus dealer perform a safety and mechanical inspection for 164 bucks to make sure it was alright. Then, what I am planning to do is purchase an aftermarket warranty for an additional 5 years, and/or 50,000 miles for 1400 bucks or so. The aftermarket warranty works just like the Lexus warranty. The warranty company lets you take it to a Lexus dealer for service and they will pay the bill! This company is recommended by Kelly Blue Book and AutoByeTel.
