GS - 2nd Gen (1998-2005) Discussion about the second generation GS300, GS400 and GS430 (1998 - 2005)

Is it wacky to consider going from a GS400 to the LX470?

Default Is it wacky to consider going from a GS400 to the LX470?

With gas prices the way they are now I'm wondering if its actually less practical.

Not wacky at all, if you have a need for the extra space and/or driving capability of the LX over the GS. Gas prices shouldn't play into your decision at all, IMO. When you're buying a $70K vehicle I wouldn't think a few pennies a gallon would mean much. Here's a worst case scenario:

Your GS gets an average of 25 MPG. Your new LX gets an average of 10 MPG.
You drive a lot--2,500 miles a month.
Gas prices double--premium is now $4 a gallon.

That's $400 a month for gas on the GS and $1000 a month with the LX. Now my GS doesn't get 25 MPG and I think the LX does better than 10, and gas prices won't be doubling anytime soon. The difference narrows to the point where it's lost in the financial noise.

Since you are not asking/expecting much for your GS, keep it -and- get the LX. I have both and I would not trade one for the other as they both have roles. Actually, I could more easily get rid of the LX [although that would really upset the wife]. Suppose it depends on what your needs are... I picked up the LX as a minivan replacement. It was the only Lexus at the time that could seat up to 8. And when the weather turns to crap [not too often in Norcal] the LX is nice to have.

Well, I think I'm taking the plunge since I've just found the ideal LX470. So, if anybody can move quickly, my awesome price of $15,900 is going to be an 'insane special' this week only, the first $14,000 takes it.
